Global economy has so far defied rising interest rates

The assessment of the global aggregate in the sentix Economic Sentiment Index rose once again in October 2026. This sixth consecutive rise, taking the index to 16.8 points, marks the highest level since February 2022. This is a surprising finding against the backdrop of rising global interest rates, but is largely attributable to the US econo-my and the Asian region. The eurozone, by contrast, continues to struggle to achieve an upturn. So far, only stabi-lisation has been achieved in Germany and the eurozone as a whole. This is because expectations have suffered a distinctly noticeable setback. The eurozone composite index has therefore fallen by 2.4 points.

Headlines of the month

  • At the start of the lovely month of October, the sentix Eurozone Overall Index fell by 2.4 points. Whilst the situation remains unchanged, expectations are easing noticeably, thereby raising doubts about the recovery scenario.
  • In Germany, by contrast, hopes of an emerging economic upturn remain intact. At the very least, the situation contin-ues to stabilise, rising for the fourth consecutive time to -14.5 points. However, here too we are seeing a dampening of expectations that should not be overlooked.
  • In the US, momentum continues to ease slightly, but the assessment of the current situation remains strong, at its highest level since February 2025. The international trend towards interest rate rises is therefore exerting only a slight brake so far. Japan’s economy, too, is proving robust against a backdrop of a weak yen and rising interest rates. Despite the many crises and problems, the global economy as a whole gives the impression of being surprisingly resilient.
