Key investment theme

The bond market and the factors influencing it remain the central focus. This is because concerns over high inflation continue to weigh on investor sentiment. This has a direct impact on the outlook for bonds. Central banks are currently (still) hesitating and trying to play for time. When action is finally taken, significant market reactions are inevitable. We saw a foretaste of this at the end of the week with the Japanese yen: the BoJ abandoned its restraint and intervened in the currency market. There are many signs pointing to a hot summer for investors.

Buying without conviction

This trend is highly explosive: institutional investors are scrambling to meet their benchmarks in the bond market and buying bonds, even though they demonstrably do not believe in the asset class. The strategic bias is proving extremely weak for both German government bonds and peripheral bonds. Trading in the portfolio contrary to their fundamental convictions could once again come back to haunt investors. On the stock market, the forces of bulls and bears are currently balancing each other out. Emerging volatility is evident in the Japanese yen.

Striking parallels with April 2025

The stock markets have had the difficult week we expected. However, it was not the bulls who were caught out, as we had anticipated, but the bears. They were caught off guard by the S&P 500’s rise to new highs and have largely capitulated. The parallels with April 2025 are clear. Will the bull run now continue unabated?

A difficult week ahead

The markets could be in for a difficult week. And not just because the peace talks in Pakistan have ended without result. But because the data we measured in our latest survey points to short-term problems. It seems that it was only the prospect of peace that made professional investors, in particular, realise that economic headwinds and interest rate rises would not be eliminated even in the event of a ceasefire.
